Lots of clients ask me to create banners for Instagram and Pinterest as well. But did you notice that these platforms don't use any banners? Instead they allow you to upload a profile image that displays in a little circle:
To upload a profile image into a circle and make it fit the best option is to use a square shaped image. Therefore I offer the option to purchase an additional Avatar / Profile image that you can use anytime an account calls for a square or circle shaped image.
The design of such an avatar / profile image needs to be clean and clear. The reason for this is that most people view websites from their phones and tablets these days. The profile images and avatars on sites like Instagram and Pinterest are displayed pretty small on these devices. If you try to put a lot of small details in the design, it will be difficult to make out what the image actually is about. As an example I have placed my own avatar / profile image below. I use it on Pinterest and Etsy and I kept it simple. Just a colorful background and easy to read text.
